i've been bouncing around WAY too many ideas for this. but this is what it is starting to boil down to. webiste will be NEVSAT.com and im just gonna go ahead and play out the "never satisfied" phrase. i decided to add spikes to the text in Never. i lean towards the one in the middle. but im torn between top and middle. feedback please?

lizzy loeb / chuck loeb ideas/inspirations

for lizzy i am wanting to do something experimenting with birds on telephone poles and comparing it to musical notes on a music sheet. not sure on a title for that yet though; but i just thought of her saying she wants to put off more time to write. so i think of the birds chilling on a telephone poll relaxing and then showing music notes in the lines would kind of represent finding ideas in new unexpected places. i havent quite figured out a good way to visually pull this off but im working on it and i've went about shooting photographs of phone poles trying to get some of my own visual stimuli. at first i was wanting to do something with photographs placed underneath line drawings but then i realized we weren't creating a cover for the album "drawing lines".

as for Chuck, i plan to use something with a compass i am thinking. I want to title it "viaje" which means "voyage" or "travelling" in Spanish. since that is what is currently taking place in his life right now i figured it would be a relevant route to take. i havent gotten to far with chucks part though. another idea for imagery is using bold typefaces, and having arial views of landscapes. as in google map satellite type of views. every time i go on google maps to look up where somewhere is i start getting carried away looking at the terrain of other countries wishing i could be there. but what is funny about looking at a city scape from a satellite view is it is hard to identify specific buildings. basically i was thinking about just writing chucks name in bold letters, and in "CHUCK" the fill would be an arial view of a rural area and "LOEB" could be a view of a city scape. maybe that could represent travelling all over the place in a way. kind of a simple solution i guess

the idea is utilizing rundown / abandoned buildings that are in high traffic areas around Atlanta's neighborhoods. Particularly focusing on locations where there has recently been a publicized crime that has taken place such as The Standard and the package store on moreland. as for the concept, its the same deal as the exterior of the building re-inforcing that look and campaign and using the phrase "be heard" to hint at what Atlantans Together is about without being too obvious.

so, the idea came the other week when a friend of mine documented a KKK rally in southern GA the other week. we were laughing at how stupid rednecks are and what not and then i thought maybe i should do a beer package and call it "inbred brewing company" with the tagline "the simple man's brew". so initially i wanted to draw some toothless methadic looking white dude but i figured that was too obvious. so then i thought of all the stupid rednecks i have to be encountered by all the time when i go to see my girlfriend in Athens. "GO DAWGS MAYUN!!!" so then i thought of the imagery of two bulldogs humping.

i designed a (cheesy in my opinion) logo consisting of that. decided it wasn't the look i wanted to go for. started adding wheat leaves to it and all but just wasn't feeling it. i then started thinking about trying to make this appear to be a classy beer. so i thought of how in Victorian times upper class families practiced incest to keep their bloodlines pure so they could remain better than everyone else. so i re-drew the "dawgs", and applied it in a much more elegant manner. then i changed the name to "incestry" with the tag line "the gentlemen's brew" (thanks john). i personally like it; it sounds like ancestry but its something else.

i really want to print this on a shiny paper. i researched a little trying to figure out of there was a way to do a foil stamp for the gold parts. but it really seems like it would be too much trouble right now considering how much other stuff i have to work on.

any thoughts before i continue mocking this up?

for the interior, i plan to have a plastic strip that stretches across the reception desk with the letters cut out of it. then, the icon would be a painted or large transfer on the wall. also, there will be picture frames hanging through out the space with black and white photographs of people exercising their right to protest.

as for the exterior. the letters up top will more than likely be metal 3D letters. Then main signage would be rapping around the corner of the walls to the right of the building. it would be a hand-painted mural showing silouettes of figures protesting. particularly people with their fists in the air; and in the forward ground there will be a big arm grasping the megaphone. i did a rough sketch of what it would look like.

aside from that, i plan to put the logo real small on the door, the address probably on the corner of the building or on the front glass doors as well, and then the store hours would be on the front glass doors. they would be stuck on with vinyl stickers.

working on a fake "Where The Wild Things Are" book cover. its not done, but i dont really have the time to do much more than where its at. i think it looks okay with the white space for the most part, just need to do the title and leave it at that. does anyone have any ideas that i could pull off to bring this together that wouldn't be as time-consuming as it was to draw those characters?

here are a couple of versions of where i am headed with the posters/cards. they aren't exactly the most conceptually brilliant pieces i've ever made and YES I KNOW THE ALL TYPE ONE SUCKS RIGHT NOW. its very much in the making. it will be several different typefaces i am thinking all justified. for the posters to the right with the nests. which do you prefer? one of them the nest is more high contrast, and one is less. also, do you think the nest looks better in the center and feel the nest at the bottom is too bottom heavy? or do you like the nest at the bottom? let me know what you think...

these are only rough layouts of compositional ideas. the imagery is just placeholders which will either be better illustrated in the future, or photographs will be used. i dont want to do hearts! a bit too obvious in my opinion, but who knows. since it is about photographers, and objects i figured i'd do something playing with rolls of film placed inside a birds nest like eggs or something. or rolls of film with pictures of objects such as birdsnests in the negatives. on the first one, the black frame around it would be a border you would see when looking through the viewfinder of an old camera. here is an example of what im talking about:
(thanks john) as for the type choice, the word "LOVE" is going to be the same font from the I heart NY logo, and then just a simple sans serif font like helcetica (which they seem to like using) for the rest. also, since industrial design plays a part in this show, one of them has a kind of blueprint type of sketch for a background texture...

or maybe i could do an illustration of a vintage camera with a big ass hightech freaking fort built around it...

so this was brought to my attention a couple of months ago. this dude from Portugal i believe decided to steal a bunch of video footage of people on youtube who recorded themselves playing instruments, MC'ing, singing, acting like idiots, etc. and edit the hell out of it to create some interesting music. this is one of those things where tons of other beat-makers would see this and be like "damn! why didn't i ever think of that!?" and whats really funny is to think of if the people who are in these videos ever were to see themselves in one of this guys videos. haha, i bet the dude MC'ing in the third video would probably shit himself. anyways, check it out. its worth the time. effing brilliant and pure creativity...

summer internship

didn't really get much done in relation to graphic design. most of the work done over the summer was film stuff with a little bit of playing around in post with after-affects keying people out from a greenscreen. but really, i have very little to show aside from a couple of pictures i snapped while working on a cheesy Verizon Wireless commercial shoot. god it was cheesy...

im probably not supposed to share these but honestly im not that worried about it...

then, they decided to exploit my painting skills a little bit for a halloween costume company. the video shoot for this was a bit mind-numbing in the sense of how retarded it was, it was also a bit innapropriate for class; so as soon as it is finished and online i will be sure to post it up! it featured a girl dressed up like a "pimp" surrounded by two other girls dressed up as giant tits; throwing money around. it was a very high concept video.

the idea/concept is to portray it as a dirty blueprint held up to the light. in the movie he built the armor in a dirty cave and there was one part where he holds the blueprint on the light table and secretly shows it to the other guy. therefore the idea is to make it look like a grungy blueprint held over a light. but i am unsure about two things.

1) if you look closely at the way i did the glow in the eye, you can see a line at the bottom, i did that to make it look like a beam of light casting over the bottom part of the eye. is that a good way to go about it? or should i just made it go all the way to the black

2) the little white lines. with or without?

the first one is the one im going with. the bottom part of it is supposed to be a skateboard (the bottom of a skateboard) but its a little bit hard to make out cuz of all the texture shit i put on it. but the idea was to show the relationship of the artists featured in the movie to each other and today's mass media. i havent seen the movie, but i get a gist of the theme. the theme which is focusing on the street art (or alternative art) scene and its influence in the mass media. (corporations love to steal the ideas that we come up with and market them)
the skate culture and the urban art culture go hand in hand. they are all about using the environment around you to "make something from nothing". therefore both objects (the spray-can and the skateboard) are going into the city-scape which is a representation of those two sub-cultures influencing the masses. the power lines (they are kinda small) are representational of the culture spreading out to the masses beyond the city limits.....

CITY OF GOD : this isn't necessarily a motion graphic title sequence, but i just really like the symbolism in this opening scene to this particular movie:

apparently alot of the movies i really liked dont really have title sequences. i found some student made title sequences for "Children of Men".

"Science of Sleep" - theres a title sequence someone made (im assuming a student) i kinda liked it. a bit short but i like it.

so some local heads i met up there were laughing at me because they said people from out of town always pronounce it "the ark" (ark being a large boat). rather than "the arch". haha, unfortunately i was one of those dumb tourists.....

i had another version of a background picture but i cant get it to upload for some reason. oh well, i wasn't really planning on using it anyways.

as far as the type goes, well, as most of you should know now i havent worked that all out yet, i focus on imagery first and foremost, then i work the type into my composition. then i worry about the type choice. in a way i was slightly worried about being a bit redundant with the imagery (in regards to the cover and mast head spread) but i feel it is good to stay cohesive being that this background choice conceptually reflects the cover story.

in the window above his head i was going to probably photoshop some broken glass up in it. and have a faded image of either the band logo, or a picture of the band performing. as if its stating those days have been thrown out the window (the band broke up). im not sure if im going to do that or not though. does anyone feel the windows in this particular shot draw too much attention??? feedback please.....

my brief: decibel magazine is basically a raunchy dirty im gonna fuck your face death metal magazine. but the design work of it seemed way too commercial to me. troy, who is in my class, happens to have used to be in a death metal band with an old friend of mine from high school. the band recently broke up. so i decided to do a skit of him working a shitty day job dozing off thinking about what he'd really like to be doing. troy also happens to be of viking decent.........

anything else? is the MFA legible to you guys? i tried playing with it a bit and doing different colors, for some reason when i opened up the file on the computers at school it threw out all the layers i had created so any editing is a pain in the ass because of the excessive amounts of layers and clipping masks which are now all placed onto ONE layer. anyone got any other comments / criticisms? maybe i should put a tornado up in the sky? haha

so i've been experimenting with texture shots i had taken, and playing around with live trace settings and kinda like this look. but im unsure of which version to go with. what do you guys think: red or blue? gray texture or just white? does the gray texture drown out the text too much? or is it still legible? maybe once i print it out i'll be able to tell for sure. keep in mind i still havent focused on information hierarchy and all that stuff. right now im mainly concerned with the over-all layout of the background.

i really needed to paint something to keep my sanity levels normal so i took an hour and a half out of my day sunday and layed up a quick character using the sketch i did for my illustration i am currently working on in Paige's class. i originally intended to just paint a zombie for halloween, but then i saw the "no smoking" sign in that particular room and decided to improvise my concept a bit.........

also, friday night i got an invite to this artshow. basically the whole show was to promote these lofts opening up off memorial drive in reynoldstown. i felt quite out of place because of alot of the boujiness of the people around me at this particular show, but when presented with free drinks i can get around that. i thought this show was interesting because they basically used the entire 4 story building, including the pool deck, and the rooftop to throw this artshow. all of the individual lofts that were currently empty were turned into individual galleries for individual artists to display their work. i have never seen art used to promote luxury lofts in this particular way, thought it was kind of an interesting idea. figured i'd share.....

layered collage of vector imagery has been a pretty popular and often successful means of design i've noticed recently.....
this is another example of layering vector images. this is some work by a friend of mine who goes by the alias "urban medium"

another piece by my friend "urban medium". i've felt recently its been quite popular to use the "color halftone" function in photoshop.

the last black and white design (i dont get how it works when i upload photos as far as order goes). this particular design is by my friend Dosa Kim. he does alot of work with a kind of sloppy sharpie marker feel to it. as well as alog of the layering of vector imagery. he is a relatively well-known designer here in town and his work to me definately reflects current trends in graphic design.....

DAIM : a german graffiti artists / designer who has an untouchable 3 dimensional style to his work, and his use of color is quite impressive as well

Athens, GA. an eclectic community just 70 miles northeast of Atlanta. This bulging urban landscape consists of about 4 square blocks which contain about 34455694667785949857494856749894576849 bars which primarily cater to 18 year olds. i personally like alot of the somewhat old architecture of downtown athens, and noticed that gothic and script fonts were popular in the area. i was stuck up here due to the gas ordeal this past week, so i figured it was the perfect opportunity for me to walk around like a tourist and take retarded pictures.

so here is the new pad. i still have some stuff to organize, but i got the workspace pretty much in tact.......

in the first picture you can see my turntables (with the customized ENRON slipmats), record collection, my table space, the computer desk i got from stan (thanks again by the way), the new epson 1400 printer, the old piece of crap printer, my camera gear, and my audio stuff (keyboard and roland beat machine)

the second picture is of my stash, part of it at least, i have two more boxes full of scrap cans as well in the back closet. i am a serious pack rat, so you will find all kinds of random objects, chemicals, paint, brushes, wood varnish, etc in my place. anything i feel i could use creatively in any way i just cant help but hold on to it.

as for the third picture, it is what the trunk of my car looks like. i recently repainted the razorfish office and they bought me a bunch of montana paint (it costs 9 bucks a can). unfortunately they are all the same 4 colors, but still, its alot of paint......

as for the 4th picture, that is my kitten. we call her BattleCat (BC for short). she is a MAJOR DISTRACTION. very hyper and loves messing with me when im trying to work/sleep/eat/spin records/everything i do

here is where i am with the mccain portrait. it is basically him with the "war hear portrayal. as far as concept goes just from glancing at it i want it to look like a propaganda poster making him look like a military "hero" but the type inside all the space reads as follows:

on his face/head - "bush 2.0"
on his thumbs up hand - "tax cuts for the rich"
on his outer coat - "i am one of you"
his inner shirt / tie - "i own 8 mansions"
the yellow shape in the background is a sillohuette (however thats spelled) of IRAN with a bomb shape in the middle of it.
the plane shapes above read "war for oil"

as for the huge burgundy blobs, they are a germanica type which i played around with trying to get kind of an arabic feel. i feel they may be a bit too heavy though..........

so i dont really have anything particularly school related to post at the moment but i just needed to get the blog started so i thought i'd share a couple of creative projects i did over the summer. enjoy:

that particular clip was shot by doug from Upthink Lab (the company i did the campaign for last semester).

this particular painting ended up being the most time i've ever wasted on photoshop, it is 87 pictures all pasted into one. the painting is stretched down a hallway so there is no way to get a good shot of the wall.....

i also got a new camera of my own and caught some cool shots while i was up in NYC.

so, i think i've completely convinced all my neighbors that i am completely strung out on meth the past couple of nights that i've stayed up working on all this portfolio stuff. i feel my portfolio has ALOT of things wrong with it, and i truly am very insecure with its turnout. then again, im an insecure person in general i suppose. oh well, you live you learn. i am really trying to work on my organizational skills and time management skills. i guess it just comes over time, bleh. anyways. props to everyone who got their work together for review.........

of course while i was in charlotte for the day that i was there i couldn't resist going out and painting something for fun. i met up with a couple of others guys i know in town that paint and we found a lovely abandoned school just up teh street from the venue where the even was held. inside all the walls were torn apart because apparently some homeless guy wanted to take all the copper pipes from inside the walls to take them to a recycling center for some money. so we decided to paint outside of the place on the rough brick surface. i found a nice 5 gallon bucket of white paint inside so i decided to put it to use and splattered it on the wall a couple of places after i was finished with my piece.

here are a couple of pictures from the show we had in charlotte over the weekend. the first few are of us preparing our work for the show, there were over 20 artists involved in the show so i didn't feel like posting a crapload of pictures. the bottom one is obviously of the turnout of the event. it was prtty freaking crowded, and i decided i wasn't in the mood to stand around in all that crowd so most of us just ended up hanging out on the back dock of the venue most of the night talking.

as for my installation for the show, since i had such a lack of time to prepare i had to recycle some older photographs frm a previous show. i ended up having to reprint/remount/rebuild them all thought because whoever hung them up at the sundial messed them up so i did it all over again.

here is the finished product for my DVD case. i am unsure of how i want to present it on a board though. one is just an illustration of the layout. and the other are pictures i took of the actual box i built over the weekend. i must say that craft has consistently been one of my weaknesses; but i definately worked on that through-out the weekend. i re-made this 4.5 times before i was semi happy with it..........

anyways, which seems like the more logical way to present this on a board??? the illustrator layout, or the photo layout? im kind of leaning toward the illustrator layout. but i definately wanted to get some practice with doing photo layouts like i did.

still have ALOT of cleaning up and editing to do. but this is the direction i am going in. i left my thumbdrive in my other bag so i had to do this all from scratch (logo / photos). anyways, i want to have the lightrig image placed in the middle of the flap and bleeding into both pages. the front flap will remain blank with the top corner cut off kind of like the way i did with my business cards. the corner will be revealing the green texture of the lightrig once i get this thing made.

here are a couple of pictures from my most recent art project that i just knocked thursday. the other canvas ones are from an art show my friend got me in on at the end of february at the sun dial restaurant on top of the westin hotel. i was kinda worried the ternader might've messed them up but i got a call yesterday from some guy wanting to buy something saying he was just in there 5 days ago and everything was fine.

i am trying to go back and make final adjustments to all my work from last semester for my portfolio. the version without the blue lines is the version that was turned in. but i kind of like the way it looks with the half frame out to the side. what do you think? feedback please..........

im definately trying to keep a consitancy here. and being that in my logo, as well as all of the stationary i did, i stuck to using black/green/white i suppose i should stay that way here. as much as i want to show off the cool texture of the bricks inside the place as opposed to the smooth greenscreen surface; i just dont feel like that message is going to really communicate to someone looking for the type of service my company offers. im not real sure how to explain it, but its funny to me how simplistic design gives off such a technology feel to me. prime example of what i am talking about would be pretty much all of the Apple designs out there. and i could name off several other companies as well but i think that is one we can all relate to. anyways, i suppose its going off this logic that technology is super complex but is created to make our lives more simple type of thing. i guess thats what i get out of it all. anyways, any final comments before i print these things out????????

the first two remain consistent, the last one was a mistake that i felt worked to my advantage. i kind of like the white sillouette look i created from outlining all of the negative space around the object with the pen tool. but if i make it black than its too heavy. and if i make all the others white, well, it just wasn't working out for me. dammit i need to quit being so indecisive........

okay, my questions are: 1.) does the brick texture annoy you because of it only being on the left side of the ad and nowhere else? i am trying to play with a combination of the two textures inside the facility. it is interesting how rough the original walls are inside the place compared to the greenscreen section of the studio. but does it make sense to use this in the ad? question 2.) should i use the faded out technique on the left edge of the greenscreen or should i stick to a straight line seperating it from the background? when the fade is there it makes the greenscreen look more like its own object. with the line it does a nice job seperating the textures and all, but it just seems like too crisp of a line. anyone got a preference? as for the last one, i dont know what the hell i was doing with that, just playing with the placement of everything. not sure why i posted it

still having alot of trouble coming up with ads. i have a couple of ideas. havent designed them yet. i think in the case of this ad, i'd like to try to have the power cable running downwards and work from that. as well as move the lighting rig (metal object at the top) down some and have more green space up top to place type in.

Avenue A - Razorfish

since i've been so bad about keeping up with the blogs i figured i'd try to throw something into the mix. these are pictures from a project i did with Razorfish. Being that Razorfish is a well established firm owned by microsoft i figured it would be somewhat relevant to graphic design. and thought i could share some of the images from when we were painting the place a couple of weeks ago. ALOT of work was done in this place. its crazy how it looked before we started and how it looked after everything was put into place. we are actually still not finished with our pieces due to alot of scheduling issues. we are planning on finishing up sometime next week.

sorry for missing class tuesday, i have been sick as hell sitting at home eating nothing but yogurt the past 4 days. anyways, this is a draft of where i am heading. i finally contacted doug and was able to get into the studio the other day (while i was sick). so these are original high resolution shots i took with a Nikon D40. i know alot of basic stuff when it comes to photography. but i havent really had an opportunity to play with an SLR camera until the other day. i really wish i wasn't sick when i did and wish i had a little bit more time in the studio to play around with the settings some more.

as for layout/composition. one thing about photography used in an ad is being careful with how type is placed because of how much detail photographs can contain. i have seen alot of ads using photography where the text is hard to read, and i definately want to avoid that. in this case, there is definately alot of detail on the walls inside the facility. so i will definately have to work some to set some contrast off of that. what is cool about the studio is how rough looking it is from teh outside and how rough all the walls are, then there is this sharp out of place looking greenscreen setup breaking all that up. as well as all the metallic equipment placed up against all the walls. has a nice look.

here are a couple more original shots. i took about 50 so im not going to upload all of them.....

i LOVE how the camera picks up the green from the greenscreen section of the studio. any picture i take with the ceiling or any metallic object in it has a nice green tone to it.

than in another picture is a canvas i painted for doug a while ago. he hasn't been able to mount if up until recently so i finally came in to get a picture of it. but it sucks cuz i painted it so long ago that i dont like it anymore. oh well. there are a few other painting projects i have in store for the spot.

sorry i have gotten behind with the blog, the last week was extremely busy for me. so anyways, i tried experimenting with smaller size business cards. not sure if i'll go with this or not. as for the envelope design i was doing this before but in the end decided to go super simple and just play off of the arrow concept. i found some black envelopes and i am not used to seeing black envelopes in the mail so once i figure out a good way to print the arrow on black envelopes i am thinking it might look pretty interesting. i am leaning toward using spraypaint with stencil. that is something i am good at, and i feel using spraypaint instead of screen printing it will give it sort of a air vapor look as i was originally going for with the logo itself. in the top left of the design i will have stickers with the return address.

as for the letter head. i decided at the last minute to completely change it up and just play off of the whole thing i was doing with using lines as texture. the lines to me give off a technology feel. and layering them on top of each other the way i did gives off a feeling of air vapor. it is funny because when i did this letter head design it just popped in my head and i couldn't have spent more than 15 minutes laying it out. its funny how hard it is to force out ideas.

this is where i am currently at with the business card design. i was first thinking of doing kind of a silouette (however its spelled) of a video camera on a tripod on the ride side of the back of the card. then have some text or just the icon in the monitor screen. i did one, but it did not really look that great. when i get the chance im going to go to doug's studio and take a picture of one of his cameras to use for the photo.

aside from that, i tried making a simplified version of rolled up cables. anyone who knows anything about working on film shoots knows that alot of the time is spent rolling cables. so i thought maybe do a sillouette of a rolled up cable chord hanging on a wall or something.

as for the front side, i want to splatter some paint on a piece of paper, scan it in, and use that inside the rectangle to the right of the card. needs some kind of texture in there aside from what is already there, its kinda boring to me.

i tried experimenting with the background color. but personally, i think it looks best left white. when i change the background color it takes away too much from the icon. particularly the boxes underneath the name.

note to stan: i made the boxes smaller. but im not so sure i like it. i kind of liked it better with them left a little larger. i'll fool with it some more though so dont you worry!

here it is. doug will be using a different version than the one i am turning in. as well as the blue version will be used for his new website which he is currently designing right now. the main color of it will be blues so it should fit nicely. i got rid of the type and all because i felt it was just too much going on to be just a logo. the more simple it is the better i suppose. even tho i really like the way it looks with all the type in it. i figured i'd let you (stan) decide which i should turn in. but i intend on printing and mounting both versions. the other one with all the type i feel looks more like a layout or something. ALSO i moved the arrow back to the left above the UP because when it is placed there it just seems like it would fit much better when placed in the bottom left corner or a letter or business card or whatever.

Salon Lyon - This is a client I am about to start working with within the coming week. It is a soon to be trendy salon that will be located in the East Atlanta Village. The owner contacted me about painting a logo for her and designing and painting a mural to be done inside the soon to be salon located in the East Atlanta Village. This would be an interesting project for me to tackle being that it is not the most expected choice for me to go with. It would also be a good opportunity for me to think outside of my head, as well as really impress a client.

East Side Lounge - This is a club/bar/lounge/art gallery also located in the East Atlanta Village. I have displayed art in this venue for the past few years and have occasionally DJ'ed there as well. I am also friends with the owner of this place as well as I know the person who designed the logo which they use right now. I personally really like the logo they already have, but I think it would be fun for me to try to come up with a second logo just for the hell of it. I am about to start repainting a mural on the inside of the club for an upcoming art show on saturday the 19th.
